Rhondda Valleys Information and History High Resolution Old Photos of Penrhys in the Rhondda Valleys, Glamorgan, South Wales. Glamorgan, Rhondda Valleys, Penrhys, Our Lady of Penrhys 1965 Penrhys is the site of what was once one of the holiest places in Wales. It was the site of a Cistercian Abbey, a holy well, and a statue described as beauty beyond belief. All that now remains at Penrhys is the holy well of St Mary, and a replacement (1953) statue of Mary and Jesus. It is probable that the well pre-dates Christianity. Much of what once stood at Penrhys was of course destroyed during the Reformation period. Pilgrims still travel to this medieval holy place from far and wide. As a child, I (webmaster) drank from the well on numerous occasions during my regular walks across the mountains of the Rhondda Valleys.
