Glamorgan, Rhondda Valleys, Penrhys, Our Lady of Penrhys 1965

Penrhys is the site of what was once one of the holiest places in Wales. It was the site of a Cistercian Abbey, a holy well, and a statue described as beauty beyond belief. All that now remains at Penrhys is the holy well of St Mary, and a replacement (1953) statue of Mary and Jesus. It is probable that the well pre-dates Christianity. Much of what once stood at Penrhys was of course destroyed during the Reformation period. Pilgrims still travel to this medieval holy place from far and wide. As a child, I (webmaster) drank from the well on numerous occasions during my regular walks across the mountains of the Rhondda Valleys.
