Porth is known as the gateway to the Rhondda. It is in this town that the two valleys of the Rhondda fork their different ways - the Rhondda Fach and the Rhondda Fawr (Little Rhondda and Big Rhondda).

Despite coal being mined in earnest in other parts of South Wales, in 1843 Porth in the parish of the then Ystradyfodwg and a square mile surrounding it, consisted of just 25 buildings, including its Chapel, Inn, and a Mill. "A Sabbath stillness" was how one person described the area, and "with exquisite effects peculiar to mountain scenery". The first mine in the Rhondda was opened in 1806 in nearby Dinas, and shortly afterwards the mine owner built a road from there to Hopkinstown.

Porth was a relatively major shopping centre in the valleys, albeit confined to just a couple of streets, the main one being Hannah Street.
