Wattstown, National Colliery

Rhondda Valleys, Wattstown, United National Colliery

Wattstown was the scene in 1905 of one of the Rhondda Valleys worst disasters, when over one hundred men and .boys lost their lives. It was a fact that as the funeral cortege arrived in Trealaw Cemetery the last hearse had still not left Wattstown - a distance of about 2 miles.

I (webmaster) worked down this colliery in the late 1960's - if only for a short time - unaware that several of my ancestors had lost their lives working here. e.g. John Harris aged 38, killed by fall of roof December 18th 1918. John (my Great Grandfather) left a widow, three daughters, and another that was born 3 months after he died. John was almost decapitated, and his body was carried home in a terrible state and laid out on his kitchen table, where moments before his wife had been making christmas cake. Sorry if that is a little graphic, but it illustrates what our families went through to bring the 'black gold' to the surface.
